Creating Connection: How WIMOs is Reducing Workplace Isolation for Women in Maritime

A sense of belonging at work is nearly as important as feeling connected at home, yet a survey by EY reveals that nearly 40% of people feel isolated in their workplaces. For generations, women in the maritime industry often found themselves as one of the few women in the room, intensifying feelings of workplace isolation. This is why WIMOs was founded—to recruit, retain, advance, and promote women in the maritime industry by fostering knowledge sharing and providing ongoing education. Since our founding in 2017, we have been dedicated to this mission.

WIMOs is making a tangible difference in the lives of our members. According to our 2024 Impact Survey, 74% of our members reported feeling more comfortable at work because of their involvement with WIMOs.

As a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit, WIMOs is uniquely positioned to apply for educational grants, enabling us to offer our members far more value than if we relied solely on membership dues. For instance, WIMOs invests over $40,000 annually in educational opportunities such as Lunch and Learns, Operational Tours, Golf Lessons, Business Etiquette training, industry-focused webinars, and more. These initiatives not only enhance the skills of our members but also benefit their companies by contributing to a more educated and capable workforce.
